During the first years of the new millennium, the Priorat project was conceived. Joan was very passionate about the area, as he knew it really well and the prestige of its soils and the exceptionality of its wines. Many visits, advice and good traveling companions led to the discovery of a semi-forested plot, in the municipality of Porrera, where he was able to recover eight thousand abandoned vines.
MAS MUSTARDÓ
Porrera was the starting point of the project that was consolidated in the Mas Mustardó vieyard, in the Morera de Montsant. A unique environment, embraced by the majestic Sierra del Montsant, where new plantations were made over the following years and where the winery would soon be built to make its own wines. A new dream comes true.
During all this time, several vineyards in the Priorat have been recovered and we have accompanied this with the utmost respect with the birth of new fruits, while in the winery the process of winemaking has been undertaken to the very last detail. “We are driven by the enthusiasm of bottling territory to make El Priorat accessible to all, and we do so under the labels Clos Corriol, Clos Mustardó and Els Igols, vindicating the garnacha, one of the local and most prestigious world-renowned varieties of this territory”. Familia Ametller
The bedrock and soils can determine the characteristics of the variety of the vines and what sprouts from them. In the vineyards of Porrera, loamy slate predominates, laminated rock of brown or blue colour, composed of silts, and the Devonian slate, very brittle in dark colour and with a great presence of ferruginous oxidation. On the other hand, the soils in La Morera de Montsant are predominantly clayey and limey, with rocks that are fine-grained and of a reddish colour.
The first landscapes of the Priorat that captivated Joan Ametller surrounded the area of Les Solanes in the municipality of Porrera. His visionary spirit permitted him to imagine and soon make reality, the lines of several terraces, in extraordinary vineyards like the Bolivians, with a steep slope that exceeds, on average, 49% of inclination. In this special place, and on slate soils, some garnacha vines were planted that each year give exceptionally unique wines.
Years later, new vines were planted in the Morera de Montsant, also recovering an area where vineyards had traditionally been cultivated and which, after decades of neglect, had been transformed to woodland. The Mas Mustardó vineyard houses the winery’s premises since 2004.
